چکیده

It has been increasingly popular to build voice-over-IP (VoIP) applications based on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks in the Internet. However, many such VoIP applications free-ride the network bandwidth of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Thus their success may come at a cost to ISPs, especially those on the edge of the Internet. In this paper, we study the VoIP quality of Skype, a popular P2P-based VoIP application. Specifically, using large-scale end-toend measurements, we first conduct a systematic analysis of Skype supernode network. We then investigate the impacts of the access capacity constraint and the AS policy constraint on the VoIP quality of Skype. We show that even when free-riding is no longer possible for only 20% of supernodes that are located in stub ISPs, the overall VoIP quality of Skype degrades significantly, and a large percentage of VoIP sessions will have unacceptable quality. This result clearly demonstrates the potential danger of building VoIP applications based on P2P networks without taking into account operational models of the Internet. We also study using time diversity in traffic patterns to reduce the impacts of the preceding

A Performance Study of VoIP Applications: MSN vs. Skype

Due to the growing demand for VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services, researches on VoIP design have attained more and more attention. Compared with a traditional voice service PSTN (Public Switched Telephony Network), VoIP is able to provide lower cost and more flexibility. However, there are still many challenging issues to guarantee a consistent and good quality of voice connection ove...

A Trace-based Feasibility Study of Infrastructure-less VoIP

Voice over IP (VoIP) is one of the most popular Internet applications. Many VoIP protocols (e.g. SIP) are based on a central-server scheme in which a caller needs to query the central server first for the callee’s information (e.g. IP address) before it can connect to them. However, such a centralized architecture has some drawbacks, such as an unbalanced load and a single point of the failure....

A detailed measurement of skype network traffic

The last few years witnessed peer-2-peer (P2P) and VoIP telephony gaining a tremendous popularity: Skype is beyond doubt the most amazing example of this new phenomenon, as its 170 millions users testify. In this paper, we propose a detailed measurement of Skype sources: we adopt a twofold methodology, using active experiments and passive measurement to gain knowledge about the traffic Skype ge...

An Experimental Study of the Skype Peer-to-Peer VoIP System

Despite its popularity, relatively little is known about the traffic characteristics of the Skype VoIP system and how they differ from other P2P systems. We describe an experimental study of Skype VoIP traffic conducted over a five month period, where over 82 million datapoints were collected regarding the population of online clients, the number of supernodes, and their traffic characteristics...
